Book signing for Rye’s Rite, Update #2 , plus Ghost Boyd Novel Progresses

Song in Head: A generic funky beat from a youtube ad, I don’t remember the company

Getting a signing event at Barnes and Noble is actually a lot more complicated than I realized. You may have noticed that I got an author signing event approved at a Barnes in Noble, as mentioned in my last blog post. Unfortunately, it may have been a mistake on their part, as when I got another Barnes and Noble email from a different store (I emailed two different stores close by to hopefully get two signings on different dates) they rejected me, and this is what they said:

“Hello Kurt, Your book is not in my system and since you have used Amazon to   publish your book, we unfortunately cannot schedule a signing in our stores or carry your book in store.”

When I asked what I needed to do to get a signing and my book in their store they responded with:

“You would need to switch to a different publisher and then you email the store again and we will look into setting up a signing with you.Thank you…”

The other Barnes and Noble I had emailed and confirmed a signing with hasn’t responded back to me from my last email, making me think that the signing initially planned for that store is now off the table. This was strange, as I clearly sent the exact same email to this Barnes and Noble, including the Amazon link. But that Barnes and Noble said they did in fact have my book in their system. We had even set a time and everything! Maybe they didn’t read the fine print.

I should have seen this coming.

My friend and I will still be at Pioneer Book though in Provo Utah at the below time and date:

Book Signing #1 (with refreshments):

Location: Pioneer Book, 450 W Center St, Provo, UT 84601.

Date: May 11th

Time: 1 pm- 4 pm

I’ll continue trying to message bookstores to do other signings, as well as apply to a traditional publisher, of which I have tried, but haven’t got the best results (I got a hybrid contract offer once). One thing I’ve learned as an author is there is so much to learn in every aspect of writing and marketing. But if I don’t learn by doing, I won’t learn at all.

On writing news I think the 1st draft for Ghost Boyd is now at 35% completion. Going in and adding character introductions and new story beats to my outline has proven to help me progress. Sometimes I get stuck, and it's nice to have an outline to help things move along. It almost feels like I have directions from google maps, where at least I’m going in a direction and not just swerving and getting lost with no destination in sight.

Sincerely,

Kurt Jensen
