Independent Book Store Signing Experience - Pioneer Book

Independent Book Store Signing Experience - Pioneer Book

I have never had a book signing before. May 11th 2024 was my chance to try one out for my novel Rye’s Rite. Pioneer Book in Provo Utah, graciously welcomed myself and friend Erin, author of The Legends of Elmra Earth, for a 3 hour period where we could sell our wares in the 2nd story of the bookstore. Two tables were set and a counter space was provided where we placed our refreshments. Being in the back of the bookstore, I didn’t have high hopes for the foot traffic we would receive. Thankfully it was better than I thought.

I sold 4 books, and though the store contractually received 40% of that amount, the sheer opportunity to talk about my book and sell it to someone, made the whole experience worth it. Erin was very nice and answered all my questions about these types of events and let me use some of her props she had procured beforehand (fairy lights, electronic candles, and holders for her books to be displayed in). We started with a reading of our own novels, and then played some book games that Erin introduced me to,

The feeling of someone truly being interested enough in your novel to buy it, is a wonderful thing. I have heard stories of author alleys, and launch parties also being great places to sell books. And without large amounts of capital, or marketing budget, indie authors like myself rely on these events to get noticed. Just being on Amazon and posting on social media, though important, just doesn’t drive enough people to my book. I could imagine those with moolah up the yin yang being able to be quite successful without going to dozens, if not hundreds of events. But for Indie authors like Erin and I, this is what is required to get noticed.

Now that I’ve done a book selling at a store, I wonder what going to a festival or any other author related event will be like. I will be sure to comment and report on how each is different, and the same.

Sincerely,

Kurt Jensen
